Health Tip - Keep Hydrated!

The summer is finally here and heating up fast. Are you prepared to keep your body hydrated?
It may come as no surprise that many people go through the simmering summer months without proper hydration. We drink water occasionally, but usually prefer to get our liquids from other, less-healthy sources.
According to the World Health Organization, dehydration can not only make you feel fatigued, listless, and ill, but can also cut down on your productivity and even pose a threat to your health. That is why WHO recommends that each person drink anywhere from 6-8 cups of water on average each day - and more if you are exercising or doing strenuous physical activity in the summer.  A general rule of thumb is that if you are outdoors exercising or working hard and perspiring considerably for longer than 1 hour, replace electrolytes and minerals through an enhanced sports drink in addition to water.
Keeping the right amount of healthy water in your body will help you fight off the effects of summer sun and humidity. You will move better, play better, work better, and FEEL better - all terrific reasons to keep yourself hydrated during the summer.
Water helps you to keep your body well-supplied with vital liquid that your body craves.  Water not only helps to revitalize your body, but also help you to combat heat stress.
Remember: Drink plenty of water this summer, and fight that heat!
Keep yourself active and lively this summer. Enjoy your favorite summertime activities, like swimming, having a BBQ, playing sports, or other fun-filled events, with the knowledge and security that your body will be protected.
Use water to quench your thirst, hydrate your body, and stay healthy.

Feedback needed on Library Renovation

The Saint Paul Public Library is planning to renovate the Sun Ray branch in 2014. The library will be closed down for several months but will reopen with a redesigned inner space that should accommodate more community activities.

In the meantime, the library is asking for public feedback about the renovation.

Here is a link to the on-line feedback request.

They will be collecting feedback until August 31. Here is what the library has to say...

With a 2014 renovation project planned for Sun Ray Library, at 2105 Wilson Avenue, Saint Paul, the Saint Paul Public Library seeks input from community members and library users on the programs and amenities that will make the Sun Ray library a great asset for the community.

Community members are invited to take a brief survey, available online at www.sppl.org/renovations and at Sun Ray Library in digital and paper form. Surveys will be collected through the month of August, and input will inform renovation plans and future services and amenities at this library location.

The Saint Paul Public Library will host a public event September 26, at 6:30 p.m., at the Conway Recreation Center, at 2090 Conway Street, Saint Paul, to provide a first look at architectural designs for Sun Ray Library and to hear community feedback.

About the Sun Ray Library renovation project
Sun Ray Library was built in 1970, and minor renovations and additions were done in 1985 and 2000. A public-private investment will support the $5,545,000 project to modernize and renovate this library. Construction will begin in early 2014, with project completion anticipated in summer of 2014.
By reconfiguring the existing facility, the Sun Ray Library renovation project will produce more space for the public. The design will anticipate the adaptability and technology needs of current and future library users.

National Night Out Food Give-away

Many many thanks to the congregation of Holy Apostles Church (2200 E. Minnehaha) for attending our National Night Out event at Conway Rec Center (more articles to follow about the event...). They are a predominantly Hmong congregation and have several farmers as members. This year they gave away fresh produce to NNO attendees as a way to give back to and connect with the neighborhood. Here is a summary from Lee Miller, Holy Apostles' member and elder:

We set up a farmers' market tent at the Conway Rec Center party and gave out vegetables grown by our farmers. Vang Ger provided sweet corn, green peppers, and onions. Lao provided collard greens, cucumbers and string beans. Neng Cha provided cucumbers, potatoes, kale, herbs, onions, and more. Pa provided onions, cucumbers and green tomatoes. The total weight was about 800 pounds. I had hoped to give some cut flowers away, but the message didn't get through to Song and Mai.

People could "shop" for what they wanted. Some were in disbelief that we were giving away fresh vegetables. We opened for business at 5:50 to a waiting crowd, and closed at 6:48 when the last cucumbers went to a pregnant mom who will make some pickles for her family. There was many a smile on our customers' faces.

Many thanks to Longkee, Maria, Nhia, Anne, and Rev. Letha for helping keep the tables filled with food and welcoming our neighbors. And special thanks to Neng Cha, who set up the tent and tables just like the farmers market, and had great fun giving so much food away.

Next year we can probably give away 1500 pounds if the weather is good. We need to figure out how to make sure people stuck in the long, slow line for hot food get some veggies, too.
Peace,lee
